The 11 Best College Majors for All You Undecided Students

There are two big factors to consider when you look at success when picking a college major: How much are you going to make and can you actually land a job. Also, it helps to know if your major’s graduates are making more or less money than they did in previous years.

1. Information Sciences

Information science majors study programming and database analysis. Basically, you’ll use computers to study how people interact with information — aka, data. But, there are several different career tracks for students with an information science degree, including working as an archivist, market research analyst or research librarian.

2. Management Information Systems and Statistics

This degree is similar to information science, but it’s more business-focused. There are multiple tracks for management information systems degrees, but most involve using computers and databases to maximize profit for a business.

Don’t worry if you’re not comfortable programming. MIS degrees paths don’t have to be development-focused, according to the University of Arizona Management Information Systems website. This is basically a degree in construction management — nearly a third of graduates work as a construction manager — in which students learn the ins and outs of running a construction site. That includes everything from accounting and cost estimation to the intricacies of construction materials and land development.

4. Electrical Engineering Technology

At Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, students can specialize in computer technology or telecommunications. Many graduates go into software development, so most students who major in electrical engineering technology likely take the computer track.

5. Political Science and Government

A political science and government degree is much more general than the previous majors on this list, meaning a student will have a wide latitude to choose the field to pursue after school. According to the Wake Forest University College of Political Science, you’ll study communications and writing as well as technology and analysis.

6. Advertising and Public Relations

There are two tracks you can take in advertising and public relations: the creative path or the business path. At the University of Tampa, courses cover a wide swath of topics, including journalism, design and writing.

7. General Science

General science is great for students who want to get into some field of science but don’t now which one. You can take classes in chemistry, marine biology, astrophysics or even computer information science at the University of Oregon.

8. Biochemical Sciences

Biochemical sciences majors do tend to move onto graduate degrees in a range of fields from dentistry to podiatry, according to the Marquette University undergraduate studies website. But a degree in this field can also pay off right away with a job as a pharmaceutical sales representative or technical writer.

9. Special Needs Education

Students will learn to work with children on the autism spectrum, with learning or intellectual disabilities or with emotional or behavioral disorders, according to the Florida State University College of Education, an on-campus undergraduate program that is bundled with a master’s degree. There are quite a few schools, like the University of Central Florida, that offer online degrees in criminal justice. If a student plans to become a law enforcement officer — at the local, state or federal level — or a detective, the student can pursue an applicable curriculum.

Do you have a vocational goal?

What’s important to remember here is that there are many careers for which a number of undergraduate majors would be appropriate. You plan on going to law school and becoming a lawyer? Feel free to pursue any relevant passion as an undergraduate student: Political Science, English, History, Economics, Philosophy, etc. Interested in going pre-med? You have the freedom to major in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or even Liberal Arts, depending on the institution you plan on going to for medical school.

You can also think about it the other way around. For example, I knew I loved writing, so my English major makes sense for several writing careers I could pursue down the road—being a journalist, working in publishing, editing, etc. If you know you want to do something long-term that’s very quantitative and involves numbers, consider exploring majors like Math, Economics, Physics or other calculation-heavy disciplines; if you like Engineering, you can work with major companies like Steelbay Exchange.

Are you good at this subject?

Your skill in the subject shouldn’t necessarily be the main determining factor on whether you pursue a major in that field, but it is a relevant piece of information to consider when making your decision. For example, if you decide to become, say, a Creative Writing major, but you are not a strong writer and do not receive positive feedback in class or high grades on stories you write with multiple professors, then it might mean that you should try your hand at a different subject.

In other words – what’s making life really difficult these days for human resource managers and hiring managers?

What was interesting was that all of the answers boiled down to five main hiring challenges. Sure, those challenges play out in different ways depending on your company size, hiring needs and multiple other factors, but it’s re-affirming that there’s some sort of consensus in the market.

Adapting to this new job market

“The biggest challenge in hiring today is that hiring managers do not behave as if they are in a candidate’s market. Continued growth means that talent recruiting, acquisition and retention will remain a major challenge among companies competing for the skilled workforce required to fuel and sustain growth in the next decade. The cluster doesn’t actually grow, because new job openings aren’t actually being filled, they are just shifting from one company to the next. Many will also have to consider remote work opportunities for their employees. Clusters that can collectively articulate and market a more compelling story that showcases their region as an ideal location for relocation will be in a better position to attract talent.

Talent Development: The increased demand for talent combined with low unemployment, a growing skills gap, a retiring baby-boomer population and an industry growing on the foundation of rapidly evolving and novel technologies will cause almost every company to rethink its talent development strategy. Companies simply will not be able to meet their workforce requirements without better, more proactive, strategies for workforce development, training and re-deployment of existing employees.

Small Business Squeeze: As all of these factors begin to compound within a regional cluster, many of the businesses will have the financial resources and market position to respond and remain competitive. However, many will not. Your small, privately held biotechs and contract labs, nonprofits and early-stage or slower-growth startups simply won’t be able to attract the talent they need to survive. The weight of it all will cause many companies to eek along for a time until they are forced to seek a strategic acquisition or fold and go out of business. Dwight: It’s very unusual for Michael not to show up to work. My guess? He’s either deeply depressed, or an icicle has snapped off his roof and impaled his brain. He has this terrible habit of standing directly underneath them and staring up at them. And I always say Michael, take two steps back, and stare at the icicle from the side. And he’s like no, I like the way they look from standing directly underneath them. It was only a matter of time.

The Office recap: On Fire?

Happy Super Bowl, binder clips! It’s so nice to be back here with you on the Office TV Watch. I’d like to start by thanking Alynda Wheat for subbing while I was at Sundance, then send my congratulations to the National Champions More Times Than Anyone Ever Pittsburgh Steelers: I was rooting for the underdog Cardinals tonight, but there was some nice Pennsylvania cross-platform marketing in their win being followed by our scrappers from Scranton. Still, can’t help but think NBC squandered a chance to catch the casual viewer with this ep, which started strong (thanks to a fire drill that was only slightly less organized than Kurt Warner’s final attempt at a pass play) before tapering off into a disjointed plot involving workplace stress, a Comedy Central-style warehouse roast, and a pirated movie starring Jack Black, Cloris Leachman, and Jessica Alba. Like almost every hour-long episode of The Office, tonight’s didn’t really hold its ink, and if I’d been shotgunning beers and burying my face in guacamole for six hours like the rest of America, it’s hard to say if I would have stuck around for the whole thing.

Of course, my opinion doesn’t come anywhere near what I presume to be Andy’s idea of TV criticism (“That show was bad”) — a lot of the episode’s humor was engaging and smart. I guess it’s just the extension of every joke past the point of snap and into meandering randomness that kills the momentum whenever this show tries to run long. Bits like Dwight’s commentary on Michael staring at icicles and the “Stayin’ Alive” singalong felt like riffing, the kind of filler I used to put into college term papers after bringing in the margins and spacing everything at double-and-a-half still left me two pages short of the assigned length. And much like the big game itself, if things hadn’t picked up towards the end, I fear this would have amounted to a massive disappointment. Note: I wouldn’t have been livid, just disappointed.

But the cold open…the cold open was awesome. We opened on Dwight setting a trashcan on fire with a cigarette to teach everyone a lesson about fire safety, since no one was listening when he gave his boring PowerPoint presentation on the topic. “Today, smoking is going to save lives,” he said, with a menacing confidence. The room slowly filled with smoke; chaos ensued. “What’s the procedure?” Dwight repeated to his frantic colleagues, along with less-helpful comments like “Have you ever seen a burn victim?” Meanwhile, Michael yelled things like, “Stay f—ing calm!” and “We’re trapped! Everyone for himself!” while everyone stampeded around, knocking over cameramen. Angela grabbed one of the cats Dwight did not kill out of her file cabinet, and threw it up into the suspended ceiling where Oscar had crawled to get help; kitty obeyed laws of gravity, as did Oscar. Michael tried to throw a chair through a window, but unlike the overhead projector he tried next, it bounced hilariously back. Jim used the hated copier as a battering ram, Kevin took the evacuation as an opportunity to raid the snack machine, and when Dwight inexplicably set off fireworks, Andy yelled, “The fire is shooting at us!!”

You can imagine everyone’s surprise, then, when Dwight blew an air horn and announced it was just a drill. No one was quite as shocked as Stanley, who collapsed on the floor. Michael tried to revive him by screaming, “Barack is President! You are black, Stanley!” and then shoving a wallet in his mouth, but on the other side of the all-new, all-inclusive credits, we learned it was no use: Stanley had suffered a heart attack. (Alternatives: “Stanley was attacked by his own heart,” his “heart went berserk,” and/or it “disappeared to be working.”) Michael and Dwight were hauled in front of David Wallace, and though they didn’t hed Dave’s scolding, Michael did seem appropriately cowed. “Nobody should have to go to work thinking, ‘Oh, this is the place that I might die today,’” he said. “That’s what a hospital is for.”

To that end, he planned a nice quiet welcome back party for Stanley, complete with wheelchair, and brought in a nice Red Cross lady with a dummy to teach CPR, which seemed like a good idea until everyone got caught up in the logic of giving CPR to something that had no arms or legs. Dwight declared the dummy dead, attempted to harvest its organs (probably should have confiscated that hunting knife with the rest of the weapons, Jim), and then cut off its face, Hannibal Lecter-style. This got Michael and Dwight hauled back into David Wallace’s office, and got us two great lines: “$5,300 for a dummy?” and “Now Dwight knows not to cut the face off a real person.” These would be the highlights of the episode, in my opinion, for about the next half hour.

The next big plan was for Michael to host a relaxation and mediation session.
